For Business: Find members who haven't started yet and re-engage them

Getting every member active is one of the highest-impact things you can do as a Team Admin. This guide shows you how to find members who haven't started learning yet, and — more importantly — how to re-engage them so they build a lasting learning habit.

What "not started" means

A member who hasn't started has accepted their invitation and holds a license, but hasn't completed any content yet — so they have 0 XP.

XP is the points a learner earns by completing content on DataCamp. It's the simplest signal of who is actively learning, so "0 XP" identifies members who have been inactive.

You can view the total number of members not started on your Dashboard -> Current Members's Adoption-> Number in yellow

Step 1: Find members who haven't started

  1. Go to Reporting → Progress
  2. Open Filters
  3. Scroll to the bottom, under Members engagement
  4. Select "Only inactive members"
  5. Choose the time period you want to review

You'll now see the exact members who haven't started learning yet.

Finding them is only step one. The real goal is to get them learning — so use one or more of the options below to re-engage them.

Step 2: Re-engage them

Option 1: Set up an assignment

An assignment gives learners a clear, ready-made starting point.

  1. Go to Reporting → Adoption
  2. In the funnel (bottom right), find the "members not started" count
  3. Click "Create an assignment" — this automatically preloads every member who hasn't started
  4. Select a piece of content and set a deadline

Tip: Start small. A short course or a single chapter works best — a small time commitment lowers the barrier and makes learners far more likely to log in and begin.

Option 2: Set up an Earn XP assignment

If you're not sure what to assign, an XP assignment is a great low-pressure option — you set an XP target and a deadline, and learners choose their own content to reach it.

We recommend a 1,000 XP assignment with a 2–4 week deadline — roughly one course, or about an hour of learning.

Tip: If you want to make things more competitive, you can launch an XP Challenge for the whole team, for full steps, see: For Business: Boost Learner Engagement With an XP Challenge

Option 3: Send a personal message

Alongside an assignment or XP challenge, a short personal message consistently lifts engagement — it signals that the learning matters to your team.

Here's a template you can adapt:

Hi [name] — I noticed you haven't had a chance to start on DataCamp yet. We've set this up to help you build [skill relevant to their role], and even 15–20 minutes a week makes a real difference. A great first step is [course name/link] — it only takes about an hour. Let me know if you hit any trouble logging in or getting started!

Track your impact

Check back after a few weeks using the Engagement or Progress report to see who has started earning XP. Repeat the steps above for anyone still at 0 XP — re-engagement usually takes a couple of nudges.

Recommended approach

The most effective sequence combines all of the above:

  1. Find the members who haven't started
  2. Set up an assignment or XP challenge to give them a starting point
  3. Send a personal message so they know to expect it
  4. Check back to confirm they've started
